Savile Row
London, England
An iconic London street known for its world-class tailoring, Savile Row is the capital's premier spot for sartorial elegance. The shop windows of this affluent Mayfair Road are filled with exquisite suits, coats, robes, jackets, and shoes; many of the businesses on the street have been in operation since the early 1800s.
The basics
The most famous shops on Savile Row are Gieves & Hawkes at 1 Savile Row, a bespoke luxury menswear specialist for more than 200 years, and Huntsman & Sons at 11 Savile Row, the inspiration for the Kingsman movies starring Colin Firth. A variety of London tours stop on the street, including those focused on Kingsman filming locations, Winston Churchill tours (the former prime minister got his suits from Savile Row), and Mayfair tours by traditional London black cab.
Things to know before you go
The pavements along Savile Row are even and accessible for people using wheelchairs and strollers.
There are a few coffee shops and restaurants on Savile Row, but you'll find more on nearby Regent Street.
You can pop into the stores to browse, but you'll need to make an appointment for fittings with a tailor.
How to get there
The nearest London Underground station to Savile Row is Oxford Circus on the Central, Victoria, and Bakerloo lines. From there, it's a 10-minute walk. Bus number 22 stops at the end of the row on Conduit Street, while the 139 stops on nearby Regent Street.
When to get there
The stores along Savile Row tend to follow normal business hours from Monday through Friday. Many are closed on the weekends, but some tailors stay open on Saturday. The street is rarely as crowded as the always-heaving Regent Street that runs parallel; it’s especially quiet on weekdays.
An artistic attraction near Savile Row
Just off Savile Row is the Royal Academy of the Arts, a grand neoclassical building home to a free permanent exhibition and rotating ticketed exhibitions. You can see an enormous copy of Leonardo Da Vinci's The Last Supper and the famous Flaming June painting by Lord Leighton Frederic. There’s also a high-end José Pizarro restaurant and the Poster Bar by José, where you can sip coffee or wine and admire the design of previous exhibition posters.
