Savonet Museum
Weg Naar Westpunt, Jan Donker
With its vibrant yellow exterior, the Savonet Museum stands out against its green grass surroundings and the brilliant blue Curacao sky. Wander through the museum, a preserved plantation house, to learn about the indigenous people of Curacao, slavery, and the former colony's independence.
The basics
Savonet Museum lies in the expansive Christoffel National Park, Curacao’s largest park. A former 17th-century plantation house, the museum documents the stories of its inhabitants. Discover exhibitions such as Nos Naturalesa, which offers an up-close look at the island's flora and fauna (much of which you can find in Christoffel Park). After touring the museum, head into the park for a guided tour or a self-directed walk. Look for the native white-tailed deer.
Things to know before you go
Wear good walking shoes and bring plenty of water to explore the park after the museum.
The museum is accessible for wheelchair users, but the park features loose gravel trails and uneven surfaces.
No pets are allowed in the park.
How to get there
The museum is a 45-minute drive north from the main city of Willemstad. Follow Weg Naar Westpunt along the length of the island until the turn-off for Christoffel National Park. Having a car is handy for exploring the park, as it gives you freedom to explore. Otherwise, catch the 9A bus from the Otrobanda Station in Willemstad. Be sure to check the Autobusbedrijf Curaçao website for up-to-date timetables.
When to get there
The museum and park are open from early morning until early afternoon, so opt for an early arrival to beat the crowds and have plenty of time to explore. The Mountain Trail is popular thanks to the panoramic views of the island from the top, but due to heat and humidity, it’s only open to hikers who start before 10am.
Keep learning on a guided safari
The park offers guided activities, from full moon hikes to survival camping courses. Take a guided Jeep safari tour to explore the park while a guide adds to the information presented in the museum. The more you explore, the more you'll learn about the region's natural history and the stories of its inhabitants. Look for white-tailed deer and other fauna as you immerse yourself in the beauty of Curacao’s nature.
