Sayulita Beach

Sayulita, Mexico, 63728

There is no shortage of beautiful beaches in the laid-back surf town of Sayulita, but Playa Sayulita (Sayulita Beach) still manages to stand out. It’s the town’s main and most-visited stretch of sand and attracts families, tourists, and surfers with its enticing waves.

The basics

Lined with restaurants, cafés, and vendors selling snacks and souvenirs, Sayulita Beach is almost always bustling. Although the beach can get crowded, the northern end is usually quieter. The water is shallow and suitable for paddlers and swimmers but the ocean typically draws surfers and bodyboarders—some local operators offer surfing lessons on the beach. Day trips to Sayulita departing from Puerto Vallarta typically visit Sayulita Beach and nearby Playa de los Muertos.

Things to know before you go

  • Swimmers should be aware of strong rip currents off the beach.

  • Lifeguards patrol Sayulita Beach.

  • Beachgoers can rent lounge chairs and umbrellas from one of the main vendors lining the beach.

How to get there

Sayulita Beach is a short stroll from downtown Sayulita. It is surrounded by hotels, restaurants, and other beaches, including the local favorite Playa de los Muertos, making it the easiest beach to get to—hence why it's the busiest. It’s a 1-hour drive from Puerto Vallarta International Airport.

When to get there

Sayulita Beach is almost always busy, but you can avoid the biggest crowds by visiting early in the morning on a weekday and by avoiding weekends and holidays. The beach is also an attractive spot to watch the sun setting in the evening.

How to avoid the beach crowds

If the crowds of Sayulita Beach get too much, walk toward the north end of the beach and onto a jungle trail over the headland to the much quieter beach of Malpaso. This beautiful beach is largely undeveloped and absent of hotels or hawkers selling souvenirs.
