POINT OF INTEREST

Schladming

Schladming, Styria, 8970

Once a humble mining village, today this town cradled between the lush alpine tarns and valleys of the Dachstein massif and the Schladminger Tauern range in the Styrian Alps is one of Austria’s premier ski resorts. Ski its nine peaks in the winter or explore the trails and Sky Walk on the Dachstein Glacier in the summer months.

The basics

The Schladming-Dachstein region is popular with intermediate skiers—offering long tree-lined runs and a state-of-the-art network of lifts and cable cars. It also offers plenty of trails for cross-country skiers and snowshoers, and scenic horse-drawn sleigh rides. Summertime pursuits in this family-friendly resort include hiking and mountain biking, tobogganing, and go-carting. One of the area’s most beloved attractions is the Sky Walk panoramic platform on the Dachstein Glacier, where the view stretches across a sea of snowy alpine peaks and lurching drops of 820 feet (250 meters) straight down to the Ennstal (Enns Valley) floor.

Things to know before you go

  • With a vast network of hiking trails and ski runs, Schladming is a paradise for lovers of outdoor sports.
  • The views from the Sky Walk are among the most spectacular in the area, so be sure to bring your camera.
  • Ski hire and lessons can be organized close to all the main ski lifts.
  • The vast network of lifts and cable cars makes this ski resort ideal for families with young children.
  • Not all trails and ski runs are accessible to visitors with limited mobility, so confirm in advance.

How to get there

Schladming is a 50-minute drive from Salzburg, and the surrounding peaks can be reached by cable car or lift throughout the year. Salzburg is also the nearest transport hub, with an airport connecting to other cities in Europe and a train station.

When to get there

The Schladming-Dachstein region is a popular destination for skiers in the winter and hikers and mountain bikers in the summer. Photographers will appreciate the alpine landscape from the many scenic overlooks in the spring and fall.

The Dachstein Eispalast Glacier Crevice

The spectacular Eispalast crevice is located along a sheer cliff face on Schladming’s Dachstein Glacier, and walking through it feels like adventuring into a vast ice cube. Reach the Eispalast with a dazzling gondola ride that passes the Dachstein Skywalk viewing platform to explore this natural wonder all year round.
