Seru Largu Lookout
Kralendijk, Bonaire, Leeward Antilles
Head to the hills to enjoy sweeping views of Bonaire from the top of Seru Largu, which means Large Hill in Papiamento. From here, you can admire the island’s western shoreline, off which the small island of Klein Bonaire floats in turquoise waters. A massive monument with a yellow-and-white cross serves as another photo moment.
The basics
Join a tour that includes a drive up to the top of Seru Largu, then embark on a hike to discover the area's flora and fauna. Since Bonaire’s landscape is dusty and dry, the view looks out over cactus fields and sandy landscapes towards the coast. The attraction is considered one of the island’s best places to watch the sunset, so be sure to plan your visit around that time. Seru Largu is often a highlight of small-group tours of the island.
Things to know before you go
At an elevation of roughly 400 feet (122 meters), it’s a bit cooler and often windier at the top of the hill compared to on the beach or in town.
You can spot wild goats, iguanas, and sometimes donkeys on the hill.
A plaque at the Millennium Monument reads Kristu Ayera Awe Semper, which translates to “Christ yesterday, today forever.”
How to get there
Centrally located on the island, Seru Largu Lookout is about 15 minutes and 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) from Kralendijk, Bonaire’s capital city, where cruise ships dock. It’s best accessed by car or guided tour. Public transport is relatively nonexistent on the island, but taxis are available.
When to get there
On New Year’s Eve, locals gather at Seru Largu to watch the fireworks. The attraction is also considered one of the best places on the island to watch the sunset, so expect large crowds during this time of day. Bonaire is outside the hurricane belt, so tropical storms aren’t likely to affect your travel plans.
How to climb Mt. Brandaris
At 784 feet (241 meters) high, Brandaris is the highest peak on Bonaire and is part of Washington Slagbaai National Park. The 45-minute hike to the peak is considered a medium-difficulty climb, but the view from the top is worth it. On a clear day, you can see the island of Curacao and even the mountains of Venezuela.
