Seven Hanging Valleys Trail
Estr. da Marinha, Lagoa, Portugal, 8400-407
Walk the meandering Seven Hanging Valleys Trail from Marinha Beach to Vale de Centeanes Beach and you’ll be rewarded with continuous views of the Algarve’s crumbling golden cliffs and the Atlantic Ocean. A linear route covering 3.7 miles (6 kilometers) of coastline, the trail passes beaches, lighthouses, and many clifftop viewpoints—all signature scenery for the south coast of Portugal.
The basics
Walking the trail from end to end generally takes hikers around 2-3 hours. Many outdoor tours that visit this part of the Algarve coast only walk a section of the trail, allowing time for other activities in the area, such as a boat ride or kayak into Benagil Cave and swimming at a local beach. Visitors looking to walk the entire trail will likely need to do so independently.
Things to know before you go
Arrive early if you want to park at the free parking lot by Marinha Beach as spaces are limited.
Parking at Vale de Centeanes Beach is mostly street parking and is also likely to fill up quickly.
The trail is considered to be of moderately difficulty, with undulating terrain, so may not be suitable for anyone with reduced mobility.
Come prepared with good walking shoes for the gravel and sand track, plus water and sunscreen.
How to get there
The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail begins just back from Marinha Beach and runs to Vale de Centeanes Beach. From the Lagoa Bus Terminal, take the 77 bus to the trailhead at Marinha Beach or the 107 bus to reach Vale de Centeanes Beach.
When to get there
Walking the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail is best done when it’s sunny and not too crowded, either in spring (April and May) or autumn (September and October). When going in summer, you should start early in the day, as the trail offers little in the way of shelter from the harsh Algarve sun.
Visiting the Benagil Cave
The Benagil Cave is one of the most famous landmarks in the Algarve and sits along the route of the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail. Walking the trail, you can stop by the top of the sea cave to view it from above through its open hole. Alternatively, if you have time, hire a kayak or a boat tour to visit the cave from its sea-facing entrance.
