Sherbrooke Forest
Dandenong Ranges National Park, Sherbrooke, Victoria, 3789
Part of the Dandenong Ranges National Park, Sherbrooke Forest is known for its wildlife—its most famous resident is the lyrebird, which can mimic dozens of sounds, including other bird songs, car alarms, and camera shutters. It’s also well known for its abundance of tree ferns and mountain ash, the tallest flowering tree in the world.
The basics
Beginning at the Sherbrooke Forest picnic grounds, a series of trails leads into the wet sclerophyll forest. One of the most popular paths is the 1.5-mile (2.4-kilometer) round-trip trail to Sherbrooke Falls, which takes you through dense areas of mountain ash. And if you ride the Puffing Billy train, you’ll also ride through the southern section of Sherbrooke Forest.
Things to know before you go
- The paths through the rainforest can be a little slippery, so wear sturdy hiking boots if you plan to go beyond the picnic grounds.
- At the picnic grounds, you’ll find restroom facilities, parking, and barbecue grills that you can use for free.
- You can download the Dandenong Ranges National Park mobile app for more information about visiting the park.
How to get there
Sherbrooke Forest is near the suburb of Belgrave, 25 miles (40 kilometers) east of Melbourne. It’s a 40-minute drive via State Route 22, or you can take the train to Belgrave from Flinders Street Station. From there, Sherbrooke Forest is a 30-minute walk or a short ride by taxi.
When to get there
While you can embark on the nature trails in Sherbrooke Forest at any time, the picnic ground facilities are open from early morning until early evening. All of the walking routes in Dandenong Ranges National Park are best explored just after a rain shower, when the plant life is greenest and you’re more likely to spot the lyrebird. Melbourne’s rainiest months are October and November.
Exploring the 1,000 Steps Trail
Hailed as Melbourne’s most popular bushwalk, the 1,000 Steps Trail (officially known as the Kokoda Track Memorial Walk) is a steep yet rewarding pathway that winds upward through lush rainforest, culminating with sweeping views of Melbourne and its surroundings. The site is just 15 minutes by car from Sherbrooke Forest, and there’s a café at the start of the trail. Be aware that dogs aren’t allowed to accompany you on the trek, as they could disrupt the native wildlife.
