Shibuya Crossing
Tokyo, Kanto
Considered to be the most famous crossing in Japan, Shibuya Crossing—also known as the “Shibuya Scramble Crossing”—is also said to be the busiest pedestrian crossing in the world. It allows people to cross from all directions in front of Shibuya station and immerses visitors in Tokyo’s fast-paced lifestyle, plus it is a popular meeting place and a prime Tokyo photo spot.
The basics
Shibuya Crossing is an essential stop on a variety of Tokyo walking tours, particularly those centered around the Shibuya district. Food-themed tours often pass through the famous crossing on the way to popular culinary spots, with tastings included as part of the experience. Travelers also encounter Shibuya Crossing during private guided tours, where you can customize the itinerary by selecting from a list of top sights such as Meiji Jingu Shrine, Akihabara, and Senso-ji Temple.
Things to know before you go
For a great view of Shibuya Crossing from above, head up to the second floor of Starbucks. There are public bathrooms nearby, close to exit B7 of Shibuya station. The crossing is almost always busy, so have your camera ready and avoid stopping abruptly in the middle of the crossing to take photos.
How to get there
To get to Shibuya Crossing, it’s best to use public transport. Get the JR Yamanote Line to Shibuyas and exit using the Hachiko exit, which leads directly to the crossing. Alternatively, you can take other lines, such as the Ginza Line, Hanzomon Line, or Keio Inokashira Line, all of which also stop at Shibuya. Once you exit the station, follow signs for Hachiko and the crossing will be visible.
When to get there
The best time to get to Shibuya Crossing is either early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the busiest times of day. Rush hour typically occurs on weekdays between 7:30am and 9am, and then in the evenings from 5pm to 7pm. Try and visit outside of these hours to avoid the commuter rush.
Where to go after Shibuya Crossing
There’s so much to do near Shibuya Crossing, from eating out to shopping to going to entertainment venues. If you’re hungry, Ichiran is a popular chain for ramen, UobeiGoulabe serves conveyor belt sushi, and Mo-Mo-Paradise Shibuya Center specializes in sukiyaki and shabu-shabu hot pot dishes. Visit the department stores of Hands Shibuya, Shibuya Loft, MEGA Don Quijote, and Shibuya 109, or watch English stand-up comedy at Tokyo Comedy Bar.
