POINT OF INTEREST

Signal Iduna Park

Strobelallee 50, Dortmund, Germany, 44139

Also known as the Westphalia Stadium (Westfalenstadion), Signal Iduna Park is the home of the yellow-shirted soccer team Borussia Dortmund. A top-tier team in the German Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund has enough fans to command a huge stadium. With a capacity for more than 80,000 spectators, it's one of Europe’s biggest and a must-see for fans of the beautiful game.

The basics

The arena is best explored on an official stadium tour, which gives you the lowdown on the stadium and the Borussia Dortmund team and players. Tours typically cover all the key soccer ground sites of interest, such as the dressing rooms, trainer's bench, and the tunnel, along with unique Borussia Dortmund spots like the famous yellow wall and the stadium prison.

The official stadium tours take place year-round. If you don’t speak German, book an English-speaking tour, request a tour in another language, or follow the self-guided Stadium Walk. If you just want a pass-by peek or a sightseeing ride to the venue, the Signal Iduna Park has a stop on the Dortmund hop-on hop-off sightseeing buses.

Things to know before you go

  • If you want a ticket to a Borussia Dortmund game, book well in advance, as it sells out for home games.

  • Wear yellow, the official Borussia Dortmund color, to fit in with the fans.

  • An on-site gift shop sells team scarves, shirts, and other souvenirs for Borussia Dortmund fans.

  • There is a dedicated entranceway and disabled car parking spaces for people who use wheelchairs. There are also wheelchair-friendly stadium tours, which must be prebooked.

How to get there

Signal Iduna Park is south of Dortmund center in the Westfalenhalle neighborhood and has a dedicated train station. Other public transit options include metro lines #U45 and #U46 or bus #450 to Westfallenhallen. Nearby parking is expensive and, on match days, busy. It is better to leave your car in the Otto-Hahne-Strasse parking lot for a few euros and take the official stadium park-and-ride shuttle from the nearby TU Dortmund University campus.

When to get there

The Bundesliga soccer season runs from August to May. You can visit Signal Iduna Park for stadium tours daily, but you must book in advance. The self-guided walks are only available on select days, so check with the stadium directly before you visit. Tours or visits may not be available on match days.

The Borusseum

In the stadium’s northeastern corner is the Borusseum, a museum dedicated to Borussia Dortmund. You can head inside on your own or enter it on the final stage of a stadium tour to admire the trophies and exhibits that abound. You’ll leave knowing the stories behind the famous German team, from its creation at the start of the 20th century to the present day.
