Silbury Hill
West Kennet, Wiltshire, SN8 1QH
One of the largest prehistoric structures of its kind in Europe, the purpose of Silbury Hill—a man-made chalk mound which is comparable to the size of a small Egyptian pyramid—remains a mystery. Marvel over the 100-foot-high (30-meter-high) grassy slopes of Silbury Hill from a distance before continuing your exploration of Avebury.
The Basics
While known for its impressive stature and intriguingly mysterious past, most visitors prefer to stop and admire Silbury Hill on the way to other nearby attractions. Whether departing from Glastonbury, Salisbury, or London, shared and private excursions typically offer brief stops at Silbury Hill combined with longer visits to the mystical stone circles of Avebury and Stonehenge. Some excursions also visit lesser-known Woodhenge and the village of Lacock.
Things to Know Before You Go
A visit to Silbury Hill is best when combined with a wider exploration of the surrounding area.
Plan to spend fewer than 30 minutes at the site.
Silbury Hill is fenced off and cannot be climbed.
Silbury Hill is accessible for wheelchair users and strollers to admire from a distance.
How to Get There
Silbury Hill is situated in Avebury, Wiltshire, and is 84 miles (135 kilometers) from central London. Most travelers find it easiest to arrive by private vehicle or as part of an organized excursion, although the Stagecoach number 49 bus from Swindon also passes close to the site. There’s limited on-site parking available.
When to Get There
The Silbury Hill site is freely and publicly accessible year-round during daylight hours, although visitors cannot climb the mound. To avoid the larger tour group crowds, visit early in the day, or stop by during summer for the best weather.
Prehistoric England
As one of England’s lesser-known prehistoric sites, Silbury Hill excellently complements visits to nearby Stonehenge and Avebury and most guided tours combine stops at all three. Farther afield, Grime’s Graves—one of the few surviving prehistoric flint mines in England—Chysauster Ancient Village, and Maiden Castle are also excellent.
