Sitka History Museum

330 Harbor Drive, Sitka, Alaska

The Sitka History Museum (previously known as the Isabel Miller Museum) is Sitka’s most comprehensive museum. Exhibits cover all areas of Sitka history, from the original Tlingit culture and the first European explorers to the Russian occupation and the sale of Alaska to the United States in 1867. The museum also features exhibits on mining, logging, and fishing—important industries in Sitka today.

For a quick introduction to Sitka’s colorful past, a visit to the Sitka History Museum is a must. Tours of the museum are available on request, and rotating exhibits feature the work of local artists and photographers. Kids will enjoy the model of 1867 Sitka, an exact replica of how the town looked when Alaska was transferred to the United States. There’s also a gift shop where you can find an extensive selection of Alaska history books as well as Native handicrafts and local art.

  • A visit to the Sitka History Museum is a must for history buffs and families.

  • A small admission fee is required to visit the museum.

  • The building is wheelchair accessible.

The Sitka History Museum is located along the Sitka waterfront, adjacent to the Sitka Centennial Visitors Center. It's a short walk from St. Michael’s Cathedral and the Baranof Castle Historic Site. Ample parking is available in front of the museum.

The museum is open on weekdays and select weekends during the summer months. It has limited hours during the winter months, so it’s best to call ahead for current hours if you’re visiting outside the main tourist season.

To delve deeper into Alaska Native history and culture, visit the nearby Sheldon Jackson Museum, which displays a range of Indigenous cultural artifacts. You can also hike to the top of Castle Hill and see the spot where Alaska was officially transferred from Russia to the US in 1867, and tour the Russian Bishop’s House, one of Alaska’s few remaining Russian buildings.
