POINT OF INTEREST

Six Flags Discovery Kingdom

1001 Fairgrounds Drive, Vallejo, California

Can’t decide on the amusement park or zoo? Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo finds a middle ground, with more than 40 rides and attractions spanning 135 acres (55 hectares), including roller coasters and water rides. There are also mellow options, like bumper buggies and a giant swing—plus elephants, tigers, giraffes, and more.

Six Flags Discovery Kingdom is a one-stop shop for fun and furry friends. In addition to roller coasters, Looney Tunes Seaport features pint-sized rides and character appearances, great for smaller kids. The animal area showcases big cats, reptiles, and sharks, among other creatures. Slow down in the butterfly habitat, and stick around for one of the many animal presentations throughout the day—think ball-balancing sea lions and jumping dolphins.

With a Go San Francisco card, you can combine your Six Flags Discovery Kingdom trip with other adventures around the city, including hop-on hop-off bus tours, Aquarium of the Bay, and the California Academy of Sciences. The pass includes entry to many attractions throughout the area, as well as jump-the-line passes at select sites. There are different pass options.

  • Six Flags Discovery Kingdom is open daily in summer and on weekends (often Thursday-Sunday) in fall, winter, and spring, plus for school holidays like spring break.

  • Outside food, beverages, and coolers are not allowed. The park's food options include various international cuisines, snack and beverage stations, and sweets.

  • Animal shows happen throughout the day, though certain shows can get busy. Pick up a schedule when entering the park and arrive at the shows early for a seat.

  • In addition to standard animal shows, you can pay extra for a hands-on experience, such as a dolphin swim, giraffe feeding, or trainer for a day.

Six Flags Discovery Kingdom is located about 35 miles (56 kilometers) from San Francisco and is most easily accessible by car via Interstate 80. A San Francisco–Vallejo ferry route docks at the Vallejo Ferry Building, a 10-minute car ride from the park, or the SolTrans Bus No. 5 stops just outside the park.

The Bay Area heats up weather-wise from Sep.–Nov. The shoulder seasons of Apr.–May and Sep.–Oct. are the best times to visit the park, as the weather is warm and most kids are in school, so attendance is lighter. If your schedule allows, visit on a weekday for more time on the coasters and less in line.

Don’t be surprised when you’re not alone at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom on a sunny summer day. There are things you can do to sidestep the crowds. Start at the attractions furthest from the entrance. Decide which rides are your top priorities and hit those first—or after 5pm when the lines are shorter. Eat lunch or dinner at off-hours for shorter vendor lines and more open tables—plus then you can ride while others eat.
