Sofia National Archaeological Museum
Center, Sofia, Bulgaria, 1000
Over a million years’ worth of Bulgarian history is displayed across the four halls that make up the National Institute of Archaeology & Museum. The museum opened in 1905, occupying a 15th-century former mosque that was once the city’s largest. Exhibits include prehistoric objects, unique Thracian treasures, as well as a range of artifacts spanning Early Antiquity to the Late Middle Ages.
The basics
Several city tours include the museum along with other iconic attractions such as the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and National Art Gallery. Such tours provide a comprehensive overview of the Bulgarian capital, and can often be personalized to suit your interests and schedule. Put aside an hour or so to explore the museum’s interior, making sure not to miss the famous Valchitran and Lukovit Treasures. Guided tours can be booked at reception.
