Sombrero Reef

Sombrero Reef, FL

Sombrero Reef is part of the Sombrero Key Sanctuary Preservation Area and the greater Florida Reef, the world’s third-largest barrier reef ecosystem. It’s a spur-and-groove reef formation and one of the most popular snorkeling spots in the Florida Keys. Restoration efforts are underway to protect and preserve this delicate ecosystem.

The basics

Nearly a dozen mooring buoys are on the south side of the Sombrero Reef Lighthouse, which makes it a convenient place to snorkel when you book a guided boating or kayak tour. Diverse marine life swims around the reef so you may see anything from grouper and snapper to nurse sharks, stingrays, and sea turtles. Many visitors rent kayaks on the island or take a paddling tour of the 10-mile (16-kilometer) loop around the lighthouse by launching from Sombrero Beach on Marathon Island.

Things to know before you go

  • Fishing and lobstering are not allowed.

  • You cannot stand or climb on the Sombrero Lighthouse.

  • Thunderstorms can reduce water clarity and marine life presence.

How to get there

Sombrero Reef is beneath the water so the only way to access it is by boat. You can see some of it from the boat, but for the best views, snorkeling or scuba diving is necessary. If you don’t have a boat, tour companies launching from Marathon Island offer tours to Sombrero Reef, five nautical miles (nine nautical kilometers) south of Pigeon Key.

When to get there

Typically, the best time to snorkel in the Florida Keys is June–August. The warm water and strong sunlight create optimal conditions to view Sombrero Reef. However, this is also the hottest time of year in Florida, so you may want to plan an early morning visit to explore the reef while minimizing the risk of sunburn and dehydration.

Other things to see off of Marathon

Marathon is a popular stopping point for people driving the Overseas Highway to Key West. Not only does the island have plenty of things to eat and do, but it’s also home to other landmark attractions such as the new and old Seven Mile Bridges. You can walk or bike the Old Seven Mile Bridge to Pigeon Key where there's a small museum.
