POINT OF INTEREST

Somerset Falls

Hope Bay, Jamaica

A short drive from Port Antonio, Somerset Falls is a pretty waterfall surrounded by lush jungle, where a spice and indigo farm once stood. The waterfall's 32-foot (9.8-meter) cascades tumble into a clear river, where you can swim, jump from the rocks, or race down a waterslide.

The basics

All visits to Somerset Falls start with a boat ride out to the falls themselves, where you can hop in the water for a refreshing dip or simply enjoy the views from the boat while your guide provides live commentary. Tours depart from Kingston and Ocho Rios, while day tours of Portland often include a stop at Somerset Falls. Some tours combine the falls with other local attractions or activities, such as rafting down the Rio Grande.

Things to know before you go

  • The falls occasionally dry up during periods of low rain, so check for up-to-date information before setting out.

  • There is an admission fee to visit, but it includes the boat ride out.

  • On-site facilities include a restaurant, restrooms, and a changing area.

How to get there

Somerset Falls is located in the parish of Portland on Jamaica’s northeastern coast, about a 25-minute drive from Port Antonio or around two hours from both Kingston and Ocho Rios. The falls are right off the main coastal highway and there’s plenty of parking for travelers with rental cars; you may prefer to take a taxi or join a tour if you aren’t used to driving locally.

When to get there

The best time to visit Somerset Falls is first thing in the morning on a weekday if you want to avoid crowds. If arriving in late fall or early winter, just after the rainy season, the cascades are likely to have plenty of water. Jamaica's dry months are roughly from December to April; the falls can dry up towards the end of the season.

Dunn’s River Falls

If you’re staying in Ocho Rios, you might find it easier to get to nearby Dunn’s River Falls on the White River. This famous—and wildly popular—spot features terraced waterfalls that descend down around 1,000 feet (3,000 meters). You can rent water shoes and climb up the falls by making a human chain with other travelers and guides.
