Sossusvlei
Namib-Naukluft National Park, Namibia
Nestled in the Namib-Naukluft National Park not far from famous Dune 45, the otherworldly salt and clay pan landscape of Sossusvlei is a must-see when in Namibia. Come to experience and photograph the towering red dunes and golden sands framed against a sprawling blue sky.
The Basics
For the most comprehensive view, join a multi-day tour. Tours typically depart Swakopmund or Windhoek and combine an overnight stay at Sossusvlei with wider exploration of Namib Desert highlights, including the wildlife-rich Etosha National Park. Tours tend to approach Sossusvlei from the Sesriem Gate, before carrying on to Deadvlei, Big Daddy, or Dune 45. Some long-distance journeys stop off at Sossusvlei, coming from as far as South Africa or Zimbabwe–ideal for cross-continent travelers on limited time.
Things to Know Before You Go
Wheelchair users should confirm access arrangements with their guide ahead of time.
Overnight tours typically include camping or lodge accommodation, plus meals.
The Namib Desert’s climate is every bit as intense as its inland neighbors, so pack cool, loose clothing for the day and warm items for night.
Tours typically include National Park fees; otherwise, a permit must be acquired.
How to Get There
The closest international airport to Sossusvlei is Hosea Kutako International Airport in the capital city Windhoek. Several tours depart Windhoek, typically offering round-trip transportation across the Namib Desert. It takes around five hours to get there by car from Swakopmund and Windhoek and the roads are best navigated via 4-wheel-drive vehicles.
When to Get There
Overnight stays are a great way to secure the best views of the sunset or sunrise over Sossusvlei, with tours typically offering dusk or dawn tours of the dunes. The Namib Desert is hot year-round, though May to October generally brings more temperate climates for exploration.
Etosha National Park
Home to native herds of endangered black rhinoceros, as well as elephants, lions, and giraffes, Etosha National Park is another must-see when in Namibia. You can reach the park with ease from Windhoek and Swakopmund, either on a full-day tour or as part of a multi-day package, combined with Sossusvlei and other Skeleton Coast attractions.
