St. Pauli Piers
Bei den Sankt Pauli-Landungsbrücken 8, Hamburg, Northern Germany, 20359
The St. Pauli Piers (St. Pauli Landungsbrucken) have nearly become their own ‘hood. One of Hamburg's most popular attractions, the once transport-heavy piers—a network of connected “landing bridges,” hence the German name—are now a bustling promenade. Visitors come here to people-watch, catch ferries and catamarans, visit the docked museum ships, stroll the onsite restaurants and gift shops, and more.
The basics
Ten movable bridges make up the St. Pauli Piers, which date back to the early 1900s. Large passenger steamships once moored here—today, you’re more likely to catch a river cruise or a ferry around the port of Hamburg. In fact, if you’re looking for a way to see Hamburg, coming down here and nabbing a ride on one of the Landungsbrücken ferries is a great way to go. Beyond coming down here to get on the water, visitors will find cafes and restaurants—so much fresh fish—and the Art Deco Alter Elbtunnel, which goes under the river, transporting pedestrians (for free) to the other side.
Things to know before you go
This spot couldn’t be easier to find—look for the green domes and the green-roofed clock tower.
If you have tickets to a show at one of Hamburg’s waterfront theatres, taking a ferry from here is the way to go.
This area is chock-full of attractions (like several maritime museums), so plan to make a day of it when you’re down here.
How to get there
The St. Pauli Piers are a popular spot—both the S-Bahn and the U-Bahn stop here (get off at the Landungsbrucken stop). You could also walk here from the natural trails winding through the massive Alter Elbpark or hop over from the Reeperbahn. Though there is parking in the area, it’s few and far between, so try not to drive.
When to get there
Mornings can be fun on the piers, especially on Sundays when fishermen are stocking up at the local markets. But, any time is a good time to visit, as the piers are always bustling with activity. At night, for example, you could nab a spot on an outdoor patio to people-watch or pair the experience with some nightlife in St. Pauli or the Reeperbahn.
Get the Hamburg CARD
If you don’t already have the Hamburg CARD, the St. Pauli Piers might just convince you. Should you have it, know that the city’s ferries are part of the public transit system, meaning they’re free of charge to cardholders. Come down here and nab one—it’s the best way to see and explore the city. (You’ll catch some great skyline views!)
