The State Library Victoria is an iconic Melbourne landmark and an important community resource. It is Australia's oldest public library and one of the world’s first free public libraries. Dominating an entire city block, on the corner of Swanston and La Trobe Streets, the library is worth exploring for its heritage architecture alone, which includes tiled floors, grand marble staircases, stained glass, and bluestone walls.
The Basics
On sunny days, the lawns outside the library are strewn with students and folks taking a breather from the bustling city streets and catching some rays. Free guided tours of the library’s spectacular domed ceilings in its reading rooms, as well as the permanent and temporary exhibitions that are held in one of the library’s three galleries, are available. Guided walking tours of Melbourne generally include the library on their itineraries too.
Many people visit for traditional activities such as work or study or to read the free newspapers and magazines. You can also play games, listen to music, watch movies, or simply take advantage of the free wireless internet. Regular events also take place at the library including children’s activities, screenings, performances, classes, and workshops. There is also an excellent bookshop and a popular cafe.
Things to Know Before You Go
- Free high-speed Wi-Fi is available in all of the library’s public areas, and computers for internet browsing are available in the Redmond Barry Reading Room (you can book 30-minute sessions).
- You can purchase a card to print in the Redmond Barry Reading Room.
- Wheelchair ramps are located on La Trobe Street; the library also offers a wheelchair for use.
- Self-serve lockers are located in the Russell Street Welcome Zone.
How to Get There
The State Library Victoria is located between Swanston and Russell Streets on La Trobe Street and is easily accessible by public transportation. The Melbourne Central train station is found directly across from the Swanston Street entrance. There are tram stops near the entrances on Swanston and La Trobe Streets, and the nearest bus stops are on Lonsdale, Russell, and Exhibition Streets. The library does not have on-site parking.
When to Get There
It’s open daily, but does close for some public holidays such as Christmas, and the free guided tours do not run on any public holidays. Throughout the year, the library hosts events such as talks, workshops, films, and more—most of them free to the public.
