POINT OF INTEREST

Subacius Hill

Subačiaus Gatvė, Vilnius, Lithuania, 11350

Located just south of the artsy Užupis district, Subacius Hill is an easily-accessible lookout point offering views across Vilnius. The telescopes and information placards explain what you're looking at and help you spot landmarks as you gaze northwest. On a clear day, you can see St. Anne's Church and the hilltop Gediminas Tower.

The basics

Also known as the Subačiaus Observation Deck, the viewing point on Subacius Hill offers one of the better views in Vilnius. Beyond the vistas, you can stop by this off-the-beaten-path lookout to admire the love locks attached to its iron railing, and stick around for refreshments at the terrace bar. You can easily stroll here through Kūdrų Park or visit on a guided tour. Some Old Town walking tours add a stop at this tranquil destination.

Things to know before you go

  • Wear comfortable shoes if you're walking through the park, since not all the paths are paved.
  • Bring your own padlock—and lose the key—if you want to contribute to the love locks here.
  • The viewing area is free to visit.

How to get there

The Subacius Hill observation deck is located at the corner of Subačiaus and Maironio streets, about a 15-minute walk from Užupis. To arrive by foot, stroll through Užupis until you reach the Uzupio Bridge. From there, it's a short walk through the park. You can also hop on the bus. Several lines service the nearby Subačiaus St. stop.

When to get there

There's really no bad time to visit Subacius Hill, though the sunset here is a standout, and the views of the city at night are charming. If you visit very early—or quite late—the on-site café will likely be closed. If you want to add-on a visit to Užupis, consider visiting on April 1, the national holiday of this quirky area that's technically an independent republic.

Where to Find the Best Views in Vilnius

Although Subacius Hill offers great views, there are at least three other lookouts offering standout perspectives on the cityscape. For views from the tallest building in the Old Town, you can pay a small fee to ascend St. John‘s Church Bell Tower. Alternatively, hop on a funicular up to Gediminas Castle Tower to check out views from its hilltop perch, or visit the Hill of Three Crosses to admire the monument and take in the sunset.
