POINT OF INTEREST

Submarine Vesikko

Suomenlinna, Helsinki, Finland, 00190

Built in the early 1930s, Submarine Vesikko was a prototype for Germany’s Type II U-boats, which were later used by the German Navy in World War II. In 1935, Vesikko was bought by Finland and was later used to defend Finland from the Soviets in the 1939 Winter War. It now functions as a museum, with visitors able to board and explore.

The basics

The only WWII-era submarine in Finland to have escaped the scrap heap, Submarine Vesikko is now a popular visitor attraction. Climb aboard the restored vessel and explore the cramped interior, which would have at one time held a crew of around 20 people.

Visitors can purchase an individual entrance ticket that also includes access to the Military Museum’s Manege, or opt for a Museum Card, which provides access to all six museums in Helsinki’s UNESCO-listed Suomenlinna Fortress, a maritime fortress spread across six islands. Some city sightseeing passes include free entry to Vesikko. For a sense of what to expect, visit the Suomenlinna website and take a virtual tour of the submarine before your visit.

Things to know before you go

  • Submarine Vesikko is not wheelchair-accessible.
  • The interior is cramped and may not be suitable for travelers who suffer from claustrophobia.
  • Because of its small size, only a limited number of people can access the submarine at a time, meaning you may have to wait in line before you enter.
  • There is no ATM on Suomenlinna, although debit and credit cards are widely accepted.

How to get there

Take the HSL ferry from Market Square (Kauppatori). Between May and September, the JT-Line water bus service also connects Market Square to Suomenlinna Fortress.

When to get there

The submarine is open daily from late morning to early evening during the summer (mid-May to September) only. The best time to visit is in July and August when Helsinki’s weather is typically at its warmest.

What Else to See at Suomenlinna Fortress

The fortress is packed full of sights of historic interest, including defensive walls, guns, cannons, a dry dock, and several other museums: the Suomenlinna Museum, Customs Museum, Toy Museum, Ehrensvärd Museum, and the Military Museum’s Manege. The island complex is also home to several cafés and restaurants, as well as pretty picnic spots.
