Sundance Canyon
Banff’s Sundance Canyon is a moderate hiking and mountain biking trail within easy reach of town. The first couple of miles, open to both hikers and bikers, follow a paved path beside the Bow River. The biking trail ends at the paved path, but the hiking trail continues for a couple more miles uphill into the canyon.
The basics
The scenery becomes more impressive as you hike uphill, with lovely waterfalls and views of Mt. Cory, Mt. Louis, and the massive range of the Canadian Rockies. Bikers don’t have to miss out on the full experience though: bike racks are available so you can continue on foot. Most people visit independently but some guided hikes and e-bike tours are available, some of which combine both biking and hiking during the tour.
Things to know before you go
- Bears are sometimes seen here; carry bear spray and know the essential bear-safety tips before heading out.
- The tiniest creatures can also be a problem: carry bug repellent, too.
- While the paved part of the trail is suitable for strollers, it then becomes steep.
- Allow about three hours to complete the hike.
How to get there
Sundance Canyon is just south-west of Banff, about 0.6 miles (3 kilometers) from the center of town. Access the hiking trail from the Cave and Basin National Historic Site parking lot; you can also reach the parking lot by bus from Banff. The trail to Sundance Canyon is marked.
When to get there
Sundance Canyon is popular in summer (June–August), which is the best time to hike here, but it’s not as busy as some other Banff-area hikes. The lower paved part of the trail tends to be busier than the upper part. Parts of the trail may be accessible in winter, depending on conditions, but the snow can be deep in the canyon itself.
Biking in Banff
Banff National Park is renowned for its hiking, but there are also 118 miles (190 kilometers) of biking trails if you prefer exploring on two wheels. Mountain biking, road biking, and e-biking are all possible, and range from easy to challenging. Note that biking trails in the park are all shared-use, so you will also encounter hikers, some vehicles, and possibly horseback riders. Biking is a great way to see more in less time.
