POINT OF INTEREST

Sunset Cultural Center

San Carlos Street, Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA, 93923

For live performances, arts events, and cultural happenings on the Central Coast, Carmel's Sunset Cultural Center is a premier destination. The building features two stages and a gallery space, and hosts events throughout the year. From comedy and rock to dance and theater, the diverse programming offers something for everyone.

The basics

This landmark opened nearly a century ago as the Sunset School, and today's Sunset Cultural Center is home to the Monterey Symphony, Chamber Music Monterey Bay, and the Carmel Music Society. Beyond its charming, Gothic revival styling—resulting from its transformation into an art space from a public school—the acoustics here are exceptional, making it a top-notch performance venue.

To attend the community-centric events at Sunset Cultural Center, it's best to purchase tickets in advance. You can buy tickets online, by phone, or at the box office. Rush tickets are the best value for students and active-duty military personnel; call on the day of a performance to check availability.

Things to know before you go

  • For the best value, purchase tickets to three or more Sunset Presents shows at a discount.

  • The theater offers wheelchair-accessible seating.

  • Food and drink are not allowed in the theater.

How to get there

In the charming seaside town of Carmel, the most convenient way to enjoy a performance at the Sunset Cultural Center is to drive. Take Highway 1 to the Ocean Avenue exit. The cultural center is located on San Carlos Street at 9th Avenue, and free parking is available at the nearby lot on 8th Avenue.

When to get there

The center hosts live performances year-round, and shows begin on time. Ticket holders should arrive at least 20 minutes early to get settled, and you should leave extra time if you're purchasing same-day tickets. Late seating is at the discretion of the house manager.

Enjoying food and wine in Carmel

Just a short walk from the Sunset Cultural Center, you can find several charming establishments where you can sample California wines. Since there are many producers around the Monterey Peninsula, a number of them, such as Galante Vineyards, Wrath Wines, and Scheid Vineyards, have Carmel tasting rooms. To take the guesswork out of planning, food and wine walking tours are a great way to find standout wines and tasty bites.
