Sunset Square (Praça Por do Sol)

Sunset Square, Alto de Pinheiros, São Paulo, Southeast Brazil, 05463-090

Sunset Square (Praça Por do Sol) is officially named Praça Coronel Custódio Fernandes Pinheiro, but visit in the early evening and you’ll soon see why it earned its nickname: This small, sloped public green space in São Paulo’s Alto de Pinheiros neighborhood is perfectly aligned to watch the sun set between the city’s many skyscrapers.

The basics

Tucked away amid the hills and winding roads of bohemian Alto de Pinheiros, Sunset Square is beloved by Paulistanos as a relaxed green space. By day, families and groups of friends come to picnic, join guitar circles, and enjoy the precious patch of greenery; by night, they stay to watch the sun go down and, thanks to the park’s natural slope, admire impressive views of the city center.

Sunset Square can be visited independently, and it’s also a stop on several São Paulo sightseeing tours.

Things to know before you go

  • If you want to watch the sunset—particularly on weekends—be sure to come early, as the park can attract thousands of visitors at peak times.

  • Sunset Square appeals to all ages, with walking trails and a playground.

  • There are street vendors in the area, but no public bathrooms in the park; for convenience, some visitors stop for a drink at one of the nearby bars, which have bathrooms.

How to get there

Sunset Square’s official address is Praça Cel. Custódio Fernandes Pinheiro, 334, Alto de Pinheiros. The nearest Metrô stations to the park are Vila Madalena (line 2) and Faria Lima (line 4). Both are roughly 1 mile (1.5 kilometers) from the park, however, and parts of the walk are steep; rideshare services and taxis offer a more direct way to visit.

When to get there

Sunset Square is a popular stop throughout the year, though it is especially crowded on good-weather days and on weekends, particularly in the lead-up to the sunset. Consider visiting on weekdays for a slightly calmer experience. Most crowds depart soon after dark.

São Paulo’s public parks

São Paulo may have the reputation of being an urban jungle, but this skyscraper-filled city still boasts some enviable green spaces. One unmissable public park is Ibirapuera Park, the largest in the city center and home to museums, bike paths, and other recreational opportunities. Other spots to seek out include Villa Lobos Park (nearby in Vila Madalena), the Botanical Garden, and Trianon Park.
