Swakopmund Jetty

The Swakopmund Jetty, with wild blue waves crashing underneath, stretches into the Atlantic Ocean. In the evening, the sunset over the water turns the surrounding sand dunes golden, and during the day, you may be able to spot dolphins playing in the bay. This historic structure is perfect for a relaxing stroll or a special dinner at the Jetty 1905 Restaurant.
The basics
The jetty is a perfect stop when exploring Swakopmund–it’s centrally located along the main promenade, and you can fit it in whenever you have time. Tours of the area will typically include a stop at the jetty, but if you want to learn more, the Swakopmund Museum has information on its construction and history. Continue along the promenade to the National Marine Aquarium, where you can learn about some of the marine life you might have spotted from the jetty.
Things to know before you go
Layer up. Swakopmund experiences fierce winds off the sea, and the jetty can get chilly.
Bring binoculars for wildlife lovers, as there’s always a chance of seeing dolphins play.
There are plenty of restaurants and food stalls near the jetty, so grab some fish and chips and make it a picnic.
How to get there
From central Swakopmund, walk south along the Arnold Schad Promenade for about 15 minutes–it makes for a lovely stroll or bicycle ride.
When to get there
Sunset views from the jetty are unbeatable, and an evening visit gives you the perfect backdrop for a photoshoot. Visit from March to May for calmer weather and reduced wind to minimize your risk of tangled hair.

The Jetty 1905 Restaurant is found at the end of the pier and specializes in fresh, local seafood. Namibia is known for its oysters, and there’s no better place to sample them than at a table overlooking the ocean they came from.
