Taipei Confucius Temple
No. 275 Dalong St., Datong, Taipei, Taiwan, 103
Modeled after the oldest and largest Confucius temple in the philosopher’s hometown in Shandong, China, the Taipei Confucius Temple displays all the characteristics of traditional Chinese temple architecture. The temple as it stands today was erected in 1930, though it briefly served as a Shinto shrine during World War II.
The Basics
This Minnan-style temple is one of Taipei’s most important religious landmarks, and as such, it features on many city sightseeing tours, along with other notable attractions such as Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall, Taipei 101, and Baoan Temple. Informational placards throughout the temple offer commentary on the history of Confucianism, the temple, and the Six Confucian Arts. A 4D theater screens a short film about Confucius throughout the day.
Things to Know Before You Go
The Taipei Confucius Temple is a must-visit for architecture and history buffs and spiritual travelers.
Combine your visit to the Confucius Temple with a stop at Baoan Temple, also part of the Dalongdong Cultural and Historical District.
Admission to the temple is free.
How to Get There
To reach the Taipei Confucius Temple, take the metro’s Red Line to Yuanshan Station and leave through exit 2. There’s also a bike-rental station nearby at the intersection of Dalong Street and Hami Street.
When to Get There
Try to time your visit to the Taipei Confucius Temple for the early morning or late evening, when the grounds are at their most peaceful. Each year on September 28, the temple hosts a festival commemorating Confucius’ birthday with music, chanting, incense burning, and a large feast. If you’re interested in attending the event, buy your tickets early, as they always sell out.
A Temple with No Words
Unlike other Chinese temples, the Taipei Confucius Temple houses no likenesses of Confucius and bears no inscriptions. According to local legend, no one can match the literary prowess of Confucius, making inscriptions inauspicious.
