Tallinn City Wall

Väike-Kloostri 1, Tallinn, Estonia, 10133

Built around 15-feet high, five-feet thick, and a mile and a half long, the defensive wall of Estonia’s capital city was first constructed in 1265. Though the original wall was altered and strengthened in the 14th century, only a few sections of the masonry ramparts, and 26 of its defense towers, exist today. Travelers can walk along the base, through passageways, and on top of some of the sections of the wall.

The Basics

The stretch of wall north from Väike-Kloostri, along Laboratooriumi, to the end of Lai street is the largest section of the wall still in existence, and comes complete with nine, intact guard towers. You can also find a small passageway through the wall at the north end of Aida street. Or walk along the top of the wall which is accessible from Linnamuur street (close to the Baltic Hotel Imperial). The walkway connects the Nunne, Sauna, and Kuljala towers, and has spectacular views of Old Town (Vanalinn) and Toompea Hill.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • There is a small fee to walk on top of the wall, but it is open daily.
  • Most walking tours of Vanalinn include a stop at a section of the wall.
  • Depending on where you decide to follow along the length of the wall, there are some steeper inclines.
  • Bring comfortable walking shoes to traverse the cobblestone streets, and bring your camera for a snapshot of Tallinn Old Town from on top of the wall.

How to Get There

The best preserved parts of the wall are conveniently located near Toompea hill and Old Town Square. You’ll find the sections by heading west from the city’s center.

When to Get There

For warm weather and plenty of fun festivals and city-wide celebrations visit Tallinn during the summer. Or for a fairy tale–like wonderland, consider a bundled-up excursion in winter.

Tallinn Old Town

Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Tallinn Old Town is the jewel of the city housing its art, culture, food, and history amongst its 13th-century cobblestone streets and Gothic-spired buildings.
