Tartini Square (Tartinijev Trg)

Piran, Slovenia, 6330

Tartini Square, a picturesque plaza at the heart of Piran, is named after local violinist-composer Giuseppe Tartini. As the city’s main square, it draws locals and tourists to open-air cafes perfect for people-watching. The square also showcases Venetian and Neo-Renaissance architecture, inviting visitors to wander and admire critical landmarks such as the Town Hall and the Court House.

The basics

Being Piran’s most well-known and largest square, most travelers stumble upon Tartini Square at some point during their visit to Piran. Many visitors explore Piran on a guided private or small-group walking tour. These tours are a helpful way to learn about the city’s history and most important sights. Other popular options include tours that combine Piran with a scenic drive to other Slovenian coastal towns, such as Izola, Koper, and Portoroz.

Things to know before you go

  • Tartini Square is part of the pedestrian zone and is wide, flat, and wheelchair-accessible. However, it’s checking individual historic buildings for their accessibility details before visiting.

  • The square is a great spot for photo opportunities as you can see the hills and the Adriatic Sea.

  • History and culture lovers should look out for a bronze statue on the square—this is a tribute to the violinist that the square was named after—Giuseppe Tartini.

  • There are plenty of benches and cafes on the square to rest from sightseeing.

How to get there

Walking to Tartini Square is best as cars aren’t allowed within the square. However, free buses take visitors back and forth to the nearby car parks. A free shuttle bus stop can be found at Cankarjevo Nabrežje, just outside the square. If arriving at Piran Port, walking to Tartini Square takes roughly three minutes.

When to get there

Being a public square at the city's heart means Tartini Square is always a lively and fun place to visit. It’s worth checking the event schedule as the square hosts concerts and events throughout the year. An ideal place to spend a sunny afternoon, it’s a great spot to have a coffee and people-watch.
