Tavern on the Green

New York City, NY

In a city with tens of thousands of eateries, it’s hard to stand out—and yet, New York City’s Tavern on the Green may just be the Big Apple’s best-known restaurant. Located in Central Park overlooking the Sheep Meadow, Tavern on the Green has been a destination for well-heeled New Yorkers and visitors since 1934, and it remains a staple today.

The basics

If you’re after a storied dining experience during your visit to New York City, it’s hard to do better than Tavern on the Green. The restaurant was once frequented by the likes of Grace Kelly and John Lennon, was a filming location for movies like Ghostbusters and Edward Scissorhands, and is suffused with New York lore. The best way to experience it is by booking a table: Tavern on the Green is open daily for lunch and dinner, and you can even take a Central Park pedicab or horse-and-carriage ride straight to the door.

Even if you don’t have time for a meal, however, Tavern on the Green is a Central Park architectural highlight that’s worth discovering. You can see it on Central Park walking tours, bike tours, and other guided sightseeing itineraries.
