Templer Park
Kuala Lumpur, Rawang, Selangor, 48000
The 2,965-acre (1,200-hectare) Templer Park is a green oasis on the northern edge of Kuala Lumpur. Its greenery, streams, ponds, and waterfalls attract visitors wanting to cool off from Kuala Lumpur’s hot, sticky climate. There’s also a country club within the park and a rainforest retreat resort just outside.
The basics
Visitors to Templer Park can be as active or as relaxed as they like: It’s a popular destination for its walking trails and picnicking. Signs around the park lead to attractions, including the main outdoor pool for swimming (a 15-minute walk from the entrance) and Air Terjun Waterfall (a 50-minute walk). Many travelers visit on guided day tours, including time at the nearby Batu Caves or other natural attractions and parks.
Things to know before you go
Basic toilets are near the main entrance and parking lot, but this park isn’t heavily maintained. The streams and waterfalls are clean, but some litter might be around.
Parts of the park are overgrown and the paths are covered in tropical rainforest. Take care when hiking, and travel with a buddy.
Bring plenty of water, insect repellant, clothing, and footwear appropriate for the jungle environment.
There’s no entry fee to the park.
How to get there
The park is located between the towns of Rewang and Selayang, about 12 miles (20 kilometers) north of central Kuala Lumpur. Most travelers find it easiest to visit Templer Park on a guided trip. It can be challenging to visit unless you're driving in Malaysia. If you’d like to catch a public bus, take bus MPS2 from Gombak LRT station to Rawang, which takes about 90 minutes.
When to get there
The park is busy on the weekends with visitors from the capital. For a more peaceful experience, visit mid-week. There are no official opening hours, but it’s better to go during the day and avoid early morning and dusk when mosquitoes and other bugs are more active.
Check out the Batu Caves
Some tours combine a visit to Templer Park with the Batu Caves, a popular tourist attraction and cultural site on Kuala Lumpur’s northern edge. The Tamil Hindu temples are set within limestone caves. Visitors can walk up the 272 colorfully painted steps to the temples, guarded by an enormous golden statue of Hindu Lord Murugan. After the tour, a refreshing swim in Templer Park will seem like a great idea.
