The Baths

British Virgin Islands, Virgin Gorda

Located on the British Virgin Island of Virgin Gorda, The Baths is nature’s answer to a water park. Formed over millennia of geologic activity, this unique wonder comprises towering granite boulders that protect clear-blue pools and create tiny, private caves. The Baths is a popular spot for visitors looking to find respite from the hot tropical sun in shady caverns, wade through warm water, or bask on soft, white sand.

The Basics

If you happen to be a geology buff, you’ll notice that the boulders on the beach are indicators of the island’s volcanic origins. The caves were formed by molten rock that cooled slowly into a granite layer, which eventually cracked into blocks that were weathered into the boulders you see today.

Travelers staying on Saint John or Saint Thomas can book all-day boat trips to Virgin Gorda (the archipelago’s third-largest island), which include a dip in the Baths. Half- and full-day private charters are also an option.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The Baths have a nominal entrance fee.

  • Amenities include restrooms, lockers, and a refreshment stand.

  • The shallow waters of Devil’s Bay are perfect for light snorkeling.

  • Water shoes are recommended, as the granite boulders can be slippery.

  • You might spot sponges and corals in the water.

How to Get There

The Baths’ main entrance is located on the southern end of Virgin Gorda. To get there, head west from Spanish Town along the signposted road. Parking is available at the Top of the Baths restaurant. Alternatively, take a direct ferry from Saint Thomas to Virgin Gorda. The site is also accessible through water trails reached via Devil’s Bay.

When to Get There

For fewer crowds, get to the Baths around 8am, or wait until later in the day. During the winter months, swimming at Devil’s Bay is discouraged because of the strong currents. Also, the British Virgin Islands’ peak time for hurricanes and tropical storms is from early August to the end of October—if you plan to visit then, consider purchasing travel insurance.

Virgin Gorda

Because of its curved outline, the island of Virgin Gorda reportedly reminded Christopher Columbus of a reclining woman (or “Fat Virgin”). And although the Baths are its primary attraction, the island also boasts white-sand beaches at Savannah Bay, Pond Bay, Mahoe Bay, and Spring Bay. Hike to the island’s high point, Gorda Peak, for a panoramic view of the surrounding islands from the lookout tower.

Ways to explore

Whether you visit on a solo trip, a cruise excursion, or a boat tour of Virgin Gorda, The Baths makes for a fun Caribbean outing. After exploring hidden nooks in the rocks and snorkeling the offshore reef, adventurous travelers will want to hike to Devil’s Bay—although be aware that the short trail there requires plenty of rock scrambling and wading through tide pools. Afterward, soak in the view with lunch or dinner at Mad Dog Bar & Restaurant or Top of the Baths.

For your safety, make sure to check the marine condition flags when you arrive.

Accessibility

Reaching The Baths by land includes a 15-minute walk down a trail with some steep sections and natural stairs. Boats are not allowed to land on the beach, so if arriving by water, you must be able to swim to shore.

There are no age limits, but children should be closely supervised around water.

Address

The Baths is about 10 minutes from Spanish Town. You can drive yourself or hire a taxi driver and arrange to get picked up at a set time. Otherwise, boat tours of Virgin Gorda typically include a stop here.

Driving

Head south along Lee Road until you can turn left onto Tower Road. The road ends at the park entrance. There is some parking at the top of the hill leading down to The Baths, but it can fill up quickly.

Public transportation

Virgin Gorda doesn’t have a public bus system, so taxis are the best way to get around. If you’re coming from Tortola or the US Virgin Islands, plenty of guided boat excursions offer pickup in Road Town, St. Thomas, and St. John.

Best times to visit

Arrive early to get ahead of the crowds—the volume will only continue to grow throughout the day.

Best days to visit

The crowds remain fairly consistent throughout the week, but if you’re staying on the island, try to pick a day where there are fewer cruise ships in port. It’s a popular cruise excursion.

Best months to visit

Visit in February or March to enjoy the end of the warm, dry season and avoid the major holiday crowds.
