The Blowholes

Sea View Rd, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands

The Blowholes are a coastal destination in the Grand Cayman Islands, where the sea rushes through the rocky shoreline to create a blowhole effect. Wait for the right wave and watch as tall sprays of water surge through the holes. Pack your camera, as this is a spot for taking great photographs of this natural phenomenon.

The basics

Many visitors to Grand Cayman plan a visit to this coastal landmark to witness the dramatic blowhole effect. It’s possible to explore the Blowholes independently with a rental car, or with a guided tour that includes transportation. Most people spend 1–2 hours walking along the coastline and admiring views of the Blowholes. You may want to plan a visit to coincide with the tide times; other travelers recommend visiting at low tide for the best effect, while the surges are typically less dramatic when the weather is calm.

Things to know before you go

  • This rocky shoreline is not accessible for wheelchairs and strollers, though some of the blowholes can be seen from the parking area.

  • Many visitors wear bathing suits to avoid getting wet clothes when getting close to the blowholes.

  • This natural landmark is free to visit.

  • The jagged coastline can be quite slippery, so be sure to wear sturdy waterproof shoes if you’d like to walk over the rocks.

How to get there

The Blowholes are located on Sea View Road on the eastern side of Grand Cayman Island, about a 40-minute drive from George Town or a 45-minute drive from Seven Mile Beach. If arriving by car, there is parking available with clear signage to where the Blowholes can be found. Consider a tour with round-trip transportation included if you don’t have a rental car.

When to get there

The most popular time of year to visit Grand Cayman is November through April, while peak season is from December to February. Sunrise at the eastern side of the island can be an especially striking time of day to visit. The blowhole effect is greatly impacted by daily tides, so check tide times online ahead of your visit.

Grand Cayman for nature lovers

In addition to the Blowholes, Grand Cayman has many landmarks for nature lovers: Stingray City offers the chance to swim with stingrays, the Crystal Caves are ancient caverns home to stalagmites and stalactites, and Starfish Point is a peaceful beach that is known for its population of starfish. Visitors who are interested in flowers and plants may also want to visit the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park.
