The Culture Yard
Allegade 2, Helsingør, Denmark, 3000
The Culture Yard is Helsingør’s cultural hub and backdrop to many of the city’s premier events. A must-see for lovers of music, literature, theater, and film, the complex includes performance spaces, a library, a shipyard museum, an art-tech center, and a café—all set inside shipyard buildings along the waterfront, which have been strikingly updated. Catch a performance, browse the library’s collection, visit an exhibition, or simply admire its contemporary architecture.
The basics
The Culture Yard is easy to pair with a walking tour of Helsingør, if visiting highlights such as the atmospheric old town, Kronborg Castle (Kronborg Slot), and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. Check the cultural center’s schedule of events for its latest temporary exhibitions, film showings, concerts, and other performances. You can also spend time in its library—considered one of the best public libraries in Europe—with a collection of books and periodicals, a multimedia room, children’s play spaces, a theater, and more.
Things to know before you go
The Culture Yard’s schedule changes regularly, so check its official website for upcoming free and ticketed events.
The complex offers a wide range of family-friendly activities and workshops, plus dedicated spaces inside the public library for children.
There are public restrooms, dining options, and Wi-Fi inside the complex.
This newly renovated space is accessible to wheelchairs and strollers.
How to get there
Trains from Copenhagen and Malmö connect to Helsingør station, about a 10-minute walk from the Culture Yard. In addition, buses 342 , 347 , 353 , 388 , 801A and 803 all stop just steps from the complex, which is walking distance from the city’s charming old town.
When to get there
The Culture Yard opens every day at 10am (11am on Sundays), but closing times vary according to the day of the week and the current schedule of events. There are a few permanent attractions—like the library, the shipyard museum, and the café—but the events and exhibitions change regularly.
Shakespeare’s castle in Helsingør
The glass-and-steel additions to the old shipyard buildings that now house the Culture Yard afford dramatic views across the water to Kronborg Slot, Helsingør’s Renaissance castle. Famously the setting for Shakespeare’s Hamlet—under the pseudonym Elsinore Castle—the palace is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most famous attraction in the city. Tour its royal apartments, cannon tower, dungeons, and other highlights on your own or with a guide.
