POINT OF INTEREST

The Lighthouse

11 Mitchell Lane, Glasgow, Scotland, G1 3NU

Formerly the offices of The Glasgow Herald newspaper, The Lighthouse is now home to Scotland’s Centre for Design and Architecture. The building itself was designed by Scottish architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh and today is a popular attraction both for its panoramic city views from a sixth-floor observation deck and for its exhibitions, workshops, and discussions connected to design and architecture.

The basics

In central Glasgow, visitors can climb over 100 steps up a spiral staircase (or ride the elevator) to reach the Lighthouse’s sixth-floor viewing platform. The Mackintosh Interpretation Centre is located on the third floor and features small-scale models of the architect’s buildings that never came to fruition. Some tours in central Glasgow, such as the hop-on, hop-off bus sightseeing tour, include the opportunity to see the Lighthouse.

Things to know before you go

  • The Lighthouse is a must-see attraction for architecture enthusiasts, history buffs, and families seeking an educational opportunity.
  • If you plan on climbing the spiral staircase, wear flat, comfortable shoes.
  • All six floors of the Lighthouse are wheelchair accessible.
  • The sixth-floor viewing platform is home to a piano that all visitors are free to play.

How to get there

The Lighthouse is located on a narrow lane that connects Buchanan and Mitchell streets. It is easily accessible from public transportation: Glasgow Central Station is a 2-minute walk away and the Buchanan Street subway station and St. Enoch subway station are both a 5-minute walk away.

When to get there

Open daily with limited hours on Sundays, the Lighthouse is a popular attraction for its viewing deck, exhibitions, and cozy café. A guided tour is available weekly on Saturdays. Travelers looking to avoid the crowds should choose a weekday to visit instead of a weekend. Temporary exhibitions and events may inspire a visit: check the online calendar for details.

Learn About Local History

Informally called the Mack Centre, the Mackintosh Interpretation Centre tells the story of one of Glasgow’s most famous architects. See original drawings, video narratives, and small-scale models through the exhibition and learn about how Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s work evolved over the course of his lifetime.
