The Ossuary

Chichen Itza, Mexico

The Ossuary at Chichen Itza—also known as the Temple of the High Priest—is a step pyramid that houses ancient tombs, featuring intricate carvings and a deep cave below. Visitors are drawn to its archaeological significance, mysterious history, and connection to the sacred landscape of one of Mexico's most significant ancient cities.

The basics

The Ossuary is decorated with snakes, mythological birds, masks, and inscriptions, which offer a look into the beliefs of the Maya civilization. Gain insight into the structure’s history and significance on a guided tour of Chichen Itza; many itineraries include El Castillo, the Caracol observatory, and the Great Ball Court. Tours typically provide round-trip transportation from nearby cities such as Cancun or Merida, or you can drive or take public buses to the archaeological site to explore independently at your own pace.

Things to know before you go

  • Be sure to bring water, sunscreen, and a hat as there is limited shade.

  • Visitors are prohibited from climbing on the structures in Chichen Itza.

  • Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes, as the site contains uneven ground.

How to get there

Chichen Itza is about a 2.5-hour drive from Cancun and Playa del Carmen and roughly two hours from Tulum; most tours from all three destinations include round-trip transportation. Alternatively, public buses do run from nearby cities, but timings can be limited.

When to get there

The best time to visit Chichen Itza is during the dry season from November to April, when the weather is pleasant and rainfall is minimal. Arrive early in the morning to avoid the crowds and midday heat. Also, consider visiting Chichen Itza during the spring or autumn equinox to witness the shadows that form a snake on El Castillo. A sound and light show also takes place after dark.

El Castillo (Pyramid of Kukulkán)

El Castillo is the centerpiece of Chichen Itza and a bigger version of The Ossuary: It has four sides, a rectangular temple on top, and carved serpent heads. During the spring and fall equinoxes, shadows create the illusion of a serpent on its staircase, showcasing the Maya’s architectural and astronomical knowledge.
