POINT OF INTEREST

The Point

107 Laurens St, Beaufort, SC, 29902

The Point, also called Old Point or Black’s Point, is one of Beaufort’s five historic neighborhoods. You’ll see that the standard city-grid planning system doesn’t follow suit here; that’s because it was once entirely owned by a single resident until the 19th century. Today, the collection of Queen Anne and Victorian-style homes that were later built create one of the city’s most charming neighborhoods.

The basics

The Point has historical sites, but it’s not a proper “tourist” destination. It’s a good place to get a local feel of the city, as well as scope out historic homes, but don’t expect to pop inside for a look. You can get a better idea of The Point’s history and that of its properties by taking a guided tour. Walking, golf cart, and carriage tours led by local experts start around US$20; there are even ghost tours that explore the haunted past of Beaufort.

Things to know before you go

  • Wheelchair and stroller users should be aware that there are no sidewalks on many streets.

  • There are no cafés or public restrooms in this area.

  • Many historic homes are not open to the public.

How to get there

The Point is on the eastern edge of downtown Beaufort, between the Riverview and Marshlands historical houses. You can use 107 Laurens Street as a GPS point or simply walk east to the end of King Street. Public transportation doesn’t run here, so consider a cab or rideshare if you don’t wish to walk to drive. Remember, this is a residential neighborhood, so be respectful if you’re parking along the street.

When to get there

The mid-morning or early evening are the best times to stroll The Point; arriving too early in the morning or after sunset might intrude on the private lives of the residents, so be mindful of the times you wander the streets.

Exploring other historic areas and architecture in Beaufort

Downtown Beaufort is divided into five historic neighborhoods: The Point, The Bluff, the Old Commons, the Northwest Quadrant, and downtown proper. The Northwest Quadrant has a mix of 19th and 20th century homes, while The Bluff has many of the most popular historic sites, including Secession House and Rhett House. You’ll notice that the Old Commons neighborhood has a mix of modern and historic properties, making it easy to sightsee while shopping and dining.
