The TOP Penang
1, Jln Penang, George Town, Malaysia, 10000
A cluster of amusement activities set in Komtar—Penang’s highest building—the TOP Penang encompasses everything from an aquarium to an exhibit devoted to the notoriously stinky durian fruit. Most travelers come for the Rainbow Skywalk, a glass skywalk perched 68 floors above George Town; tickets include the air-conditioned observation deck on the 65th floor.
The basics
You can buy tickets for the TOP Penang’s different attractions online, either individually or as combination packages, or book a meal or drinks at the Top View Restaurant & Lounge on the 68th floor. Besides the aquarium, a wealth of kid-friendly activities include the Jurassic Research Center, the Tech Dome science education space, a dinosaur-themed “jungle gym” and ball pit, and a mini-karting track. Adults can learn about aspects of Penang culture at the Penang State Gallery. Some tours of George Town make a stop here, either to visit a specific attraction or multiple sites.
Things to know before you go
The Rainbow Skywalk is a great choice for photographers, social media mavens, and thrill-seekers. It’s not suitable for anyone with a fear of heights.
The Skywalk closes when it’s raining as the surface can become slippery: Check the weather forecast before committing to tickets if your schedule permits.
There’s an elevator to the observation deck, but most activities at the TOP Penang are not wheelchair friendly.
How to get there
The TOP Penang sits atop the Komtar tower in the heart of George Town, which adjoins the Komtar Bus Terminal, where most Penang buses start and finish. You can also take a trishaw, a taxi, a rideshare, or drive yourself. Tours are another convenient option, as many George Town tours include travel between sights.
When to get there
The restaurant, skywalk, and observation deck are open 10am to 10pm Wednesday through Monday and 10am to 7pm on Tuesdays. The other attractions are typically open from 10am until 7pm daily. The period between December and March sees more dry days, while September through November are the rainiest months of the year.
Penang’s best views
Penang Hill, a colonial hill station just outside George Town, offers spectacular vistas of both city and nature, and the Penang Hill Funicular Railway makes for a thrilling ascent. The Three Sixty Revolving Restaurant Skybar serves buffet dinners with sweeping city views that rotate once per hour, or head to Chew Jetty for a taste of old Penang, and watch the sun set behind sampans and stilt houses.
