The Yoga Barn
Jl. Sukma Kesuma, Ubud, Indonesia, 80571
One of the world’s best-known yoga and wellness centers, The Yoga Barn offers more than 100 classes a week across seven studios, not to mention accommodation, a café, a gift shop, and a healing center. From the enormous flower blossom artworks that decorate its courtyard to the airy shalas with views of tropical greenery, it’s Ubud in a nutshell.
The basics
Whether your tastes run to yin, vinyasa, breathwork, yoga nidra, mantra meditation, kundalini, hatha, aerial yoga, yoga with weights, myofascial release, sound healing, power yoga, or qi gong, you’re guaranteed to find a class that suits you at The Yoga Barn. You can and should book in advance for retreats, workshops, teacher training, massages, therapies, and the vastly popular ecstatic dance sessions on Fridays and Sundays. But
The Yoga Barn’s daily classes are on a drop-in basis, so for popular sessions, you’ll need to be there when registration opens 30 minutes before. Most travelers experience The Yoga Barn independently, but you can also visit as part of a broader investigation of Ubudian spirituality. Some tours pair a class here with a trip to a local healer or a water blessing ritual at Tirta Empul or Gunung Kawi Sebatu temples.
Things to know before you go
The Yoga Barn is a must for anyone interested in yoga, wellness, or meditation.
Mats and props are included in class prices, but you can also buy mats, bags, and assorted yoga gear from The Yoga Barn shop.
Children aged 10–15 may join classes with a family member over 18, but The Yoga Barn does not offer babysitting services and is not a place for young children.
Indonesians enjoy a discount on class prices when presenting their KTP identity card, and Balinese KTP holders pay only what they can afford.
The Yoga Barn is not wheelchair friendly; travelers with mobility issues will struggle with the many stairs.
How to get there
The Yoga Barn is in Peliatan, south Ubud, a little more than a 1-mile (1.5-kilometer) walk south of Ubud Palace. You can rideshare with Grab or Gojek, take a street taxi, or ride the K4B bus which connects Batubulan, Sukawati, Peliatan, Ubud, and surrounding villages, including Mas. There’s parking for motorbikes but not for cars.
When to get there
Classes at The Yoga Barn usually start at 7am and continue well into the evening. They’re busiest at weekends. The Yoga Barn’s founder also runs the annual Bali Spirit Festival in early May. Classes often stop for the duration as the venue becomes the festival grounds.
How to find the right yoga practice for you
Since Tirumalai Krishnamacharya developed modern yoga in the 1920s, a dizzying range of styles have evolved, meaning there is a yoga practice to suit everybody. Broadly speaking, people interested in fitness will relish physically demanding practices such as hot yoga, ashtanga, power yoga, or vinyasa flow. Yin and restorative yoga are good choices for people looking to heal injuries or unwind. Kundalini and tantra aim to unlock spirituality while hatha, the most classical style of yoga, is a great place to start if you’re unsure.
