Tiradentes Square (Praça Tiradentes)
Praca Tiradentes, Curitiba, Paraná, 82590-300
In the heart of Curitiba, Tiradentes Square (Praça Tiradentes) is one of the city's major hubs. Both the Metropolitan Cathedral and Basilica Minor of Our Lady of Light and a "ground zero" monument mark the spot as the very heart of the city.
The basics
This pleasant square has benches, trees, statues, and a section of glass on the ground, known as the Calçada Histórica (Historic Sidewalk), which allows you to see the square's original pavement. Many Curitiba city tours stop at the square, or at least pass by it en route to nearby attractions, and it's worth joining a guide if you want a deeper understanding of the city and its origins.
Things to know before you go
The square is wheelchair-accessible and stroller-friendly.
There are no public restrooms at the square, but plenty of restaurants with facilities are nearby.
Wear comfortable shoes and sun protection if you plan to spend much time walking in the area.
How to get there
Tiradentes Square is in the center of Curitiba, and many of the city's attractions are within a short walk. The area is well connected by bus, and lines 150, 210, 304, 307, 865, 870, 902, 965, and 967 all stop nearby. Many city tours include hotel pickup, and taxis are also widely available. Linha Turismo tourist buses also depart from the square.
When to get there
Tiradentes Square is open and accessible 24 hours a day, but you'll get the best people-watching opportunities if you visit in the early evening. The weather here is pleasant year-round, but the summer season (December–February) gets a lot of rain, so bring a raincoat or an umbrella if you plan to spend a lot of time at the square.
Curitiba Cathedral (Catedral Basílica Menor Nossa Senhora)
The main attraction at Tiradentes Square is the Curitiba Cathedral (Catedral Basílica Menor Nossa Senhora), a massive neo-Gothic church that dates to 1876. While the gigantic church is a magnificent sight to behold from the outside, it's worth stepping inside to see its stained-glass windows and religious paintings. The cathedral sits on the site of the city’s first Catholic church, constructed in the 17th century.
