Tlos

Tlos, Fethiye, Muğla, 48850

Tlos in Fethiye, Turkey, was once an important city in the Lycian League, a confederation of city-states founded in the fifth century BC. The city's ruins, which date back to the second century BC, feature wide terraces equipped with cisterns, as well as a magnificent agora and an enchanting theater that once hosted concerts.

The basics

There are a number of different sights to see at Tlos, including the ruins of the ancient city, the Tomb of Bellerophon, two Roman baths, and the Roman amphitheater—the latter of which was one of the largest in the Lycian region and could seat up to 20,000 people in its heyday. Tlos is often visited as part of a guided day trip from Fethiye, with other stops taking travelers to Yaka Park and Saklikent National Park.

Things to know before you go

  • Bring your own water and snacks: There are no food or drink options at the site.

  • It is best to visit Tlos early in the morning or late in the afternoon as it can get very hot during the day and little shade is available.

  • You can climb to the top of the acropolis using the weathered stairs; from the peak, you can enjoy beautiful views across the whole site.

How to get there

Tlos is located in the Lycian region of Turkey, about 22 miles (36 kilometers) southeast of the town of Fethiye. If you are driving, you can take the D400 highway and follow the signs to Tlos; the journey takes approximately 37 minutes from Fethiye and there is a small parking area at the entrance to the site. Alternatively, you can sign up for a guided tour that will take you there.

When to get there

To ensure you get the most out of your experience, it is best to visit during the spring (April–June) and fall (September–November) when temperatures are mild and you can explore the ancient ruins without worrying about the heat. The landscape is also lush and green during these seasons, providing a stunning backdrop for your journey.

Visiting the Fethiye Museum

Many of the artifacts found at Tlos during excavations have been relocated to the Fethiye Museum for safekeeping and protection from the elements. To fully grasp the ancient city and see how people lived there during the second century BC, it’s best to combine your trip to Tlos with a visit to the museum, where you’ll find everything from statues, arrowheads, and axes to cooking utensils and pottery.
