Tocník Castle (Hrad Tocník)
Náměstí Točník 10, Tocnik, 267 51
One of the most striking castles in central Bohemia, the 14th-century Točník Castle (Hrad Tocník) blends austere architecture with wow-worthy views across the Czech countryside. Explore Wenceslaus IV’s royal chateau to admire its original gates, fortifications, great hall, royal apartments, and underground dungeons.
The basics
Enjoy a glimpse of what life was like for Bohemian nobility during the 14th and 15th centuries at the well-preserved remains of Točník Castle. Once a royal residence and fortress, the castle was abandoned in the 17th century and fell into disrepair. The Czech state later purchased and restored it during the 20th century. Today, Točník Castle is a museum and popular stop for travelers visiting the nearby Karlštejn Castle (Hrad Karlštejn) and Koněprusy Caves (Konepruské Jeskyne) on a day trip from Prague.
Things to know before you go
Printed information about the history and architecture of Točník Castle is available in eight languages at the entrance, and visitors can explore at their own pace.
The hilltop castle offers one of the best views in the area, ideal for photography buffs.
There is a small snack bar and restrooms inside the castle.
Kids enjoy visiting the castle and its sandbox, nature trail, two resident bears, and collection of barnyard animals.
The partially ruined castle is not accessible to strollers and wheelchairs.
How to get there
Točník Castle is located just outside the town of Žebrák, about a 30-minute drive southwest of Prague; there is free parking just below the castle. The easiest way to visit is by joining a day trip from Prague that stops at Točník and Karlštejn, plus the nearby Koněprusy Caves.
When to get there
The castle is closed from October through March and open daily except Mondays in July and August. The castle is open on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays for the remaining months. The busiest time of year is July and August when daily tours of the castle in Czech are offered.
Karlštejn Castle: Točník’s superstar neighbor
Točník Castle is often overshadowed by its showier neighbor to the east, Karlštejn Castle (Hrad Karlštejn). Though the two castles were built in roughly the same period, Karlštejn has more of a storybook style with crenelated walls and towers that soar above the rolling landscape. The two castles are located just a few minutes apart, so they are easy to visit in a single-day trip from Prague. Remember that Karlštejn Castle can only be seen on an official guided tour, so book ahead.
