POINT OF INTEREST

Tokyo Solamachi

1 Chome-1-2 Oshiage, Sumida, Tokyo, Kanto, 131-0045

Solamachi is a shopping and entertainment complex that surrounds Tokyo Skytree, one of the tallest towers in the world. Visitors come here to enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the city from the top of the tower, and to shop, eat, and relax at the mall.

The basics

Head to the 450-meter-high (1,476-feet-high) viewing gallery of Tokyo Skytree for a look at the city that you’ll never forget. When it opened to the public in 2012, the structure earned the Guinness World Record for world’s tallest tower (with a height of 634 meters, or 2,080 feet). Solamachi (or "Skytown") mall spreads out from the base of the tower and is home to over 300 shops and restaurants, plus an aquarium and a planetarium.

The building also houses the quirky Postal Museum, with its collection of stamps from around the world. Solamachi makes a good place to stop and eat—there’s a wide range of options at the food court, plus higher-end restaurants too. Whether on a guided tour or a self-guided day of exploring, Skytree and Solamachi are both worth a visit.

Things to know before you go

  • If you want to visit the Tokyo Skytree, make sure you book your tickets in advance.

  • Both Tokyo Skytree and Solamachi mall are wheelchair accessible.

  • Head to the public rooftop garden for gravity-defying views of Tokyo Skytree.

How to get there

The best way to reach Tokyo Solamachi is by public transportation or bike; the Tokyo Skytree metro station and Oshiage metro station are both connected to the mall. The Skytree shuttle bus connects Solamachi with other major sites around Tokyo, including Tokyo Disneyland®, Ueno Park, and Haneda Airport.

When to get there

Solamachi is open daily, with the restaurant floors staying open until late in the evening—perfect if you'd like to have dinner after a visit to Tokyo Skytree. Select shops and restaurants might close on certain days, but the center usually remains open. Tokyo Skytree is also open daily and the last admission is 1 hour before closing.

Sumida Aquarium

Part of the Solamachi complex, the Sumida Aquarium is home to over 10,000 different sea creatures. The main highlight is the huge central tank where you can see seals and penguins play. There’s also an always-popular jellyfish display and an exhibit that looks at the sea life in habitats around Tokyo Bay, the Izu Islands, and the Ogasawara Islands.
