Tomb of Tutankhamun
Kings Valley Road, Luxor, New Valley, 1340420
Vivid wall paintings keep watch over the Tomb of Tutankhamun, where King Tutankhamun’s linen-wrapped mummy is preserved in a glass case. While most of Tut’s treasures are on display at the National Museum in Cairo, visit the tomb to see where the young king’s body lay for thousands of years.
The Basics
The Tomb of Tutankhamun was untouched by grave robbers when it was discovered in 1922, and the world was enthralled by the treasure trove found there. To visit the Tomb of Tutankhamun on your own, you’ll need to purchase an additional ticket for it when you get to the Valley of the Kings. Some Valley of the Kings tours include the tomb—check with your tour operator.
Things to Know Before You Go
The Tomb of Tutankhamun is a must for history buffs and fans of ancient Egypt.
Taking photos is prohibited in the tomb.
Stairs and narrow passageways mean the site isn’t accessible to wheelchairs or strollers.
How to Get There
The Tomb of Tutankhamun is located in the Valley of the Kings on Luxor’s West Bank, roughly a 40-minute drive from downtown Luxor. If you’re visiting on a tour, transport is taken care of. Otherwise, it’s possible to hire a taxi—be sure to agree on a price before departure, and on how long you’ll spend at the site.
When to Get There
There’s little shade in the Valley of the Kings, and temperatures can soar in the afternoon sun—both inside and outside the tombs. For the most comfortable conditions—and for fewer lines and crowds—get there in the morning.
Wall Paintings in the Tomb of Tutankhamun
When you step into the burial chamber, you’re surrounded by images on all four sides. On the north wall, directly across from the entrance, see images of King Tutankhamun as a young boy and after his death. On the eastern wall, a procession of mourners accompanies King Tut to his tomb in the Valley of the Kings. The opposite western wall holds a grid pattern with 12 baboons, symbolizing the 12 hours of the night.
