POINT OF INTEREST

Torrey Pines Golf Course

11480 N. Torrey Pines Road, La Jolla, California

Overlooking the Pacific Ocean from La Jolla's coastal bluffs, Torrey Pines is a scenic, publicly owned golf course—and considered among the finest in the US. The course is best known as the site of the Farmers Insurance Open, which it has hosted since the 1960s, and is open to professional and amateur golfers daily throughout the year.

Torrey Pines is home to two 18-hole, championship-level golf courses—the North and the South courses—designed by legendary course architect William P. Bell. Both are open to golfers but require advanced reservations, with San Diego residents receiving discounts. The course lies along a one-of-a-kind scenic coastal area next to Torrey Pines State Beach and Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, making it a destination for coastal driving tours from San Diego.

  • Amenities include a driving range, practice putting greens, a golf shop, food and beverage carts, and a restaurant.

  • Check in to your tee time at least 20 minutes before your reservation to avoid the risk of losing your reservation.

  • Torrey Pines enforces a pace-of-play policy, so golfers can play for no longer than 4-4.5 hours per day.

The golf course is set along the Southern California coast between La Jolla and Del Mar, at the lower end of Torrey Pines Natural Reserve. From San Diego, it's a 20-minute drive along mostly Interstate 5. Other options include booking coastal driving tours from San Diego or taking the Blue Line Trolley from American Plaza Station to the UC San Diego University campus and transferring to the #985 bus—this public transit route takes more than 1 hour.

Torrey Pines is open daily from early morning to early evening. Visitors interested in golfing can take advantage of twilight tee time, usually in the afternoon, between 1–2pm, designed for visiting players to complete as many holes as possible before dusk. The Farmers Insurance Open, a great event to watch the top professional golfers in the world, is usually held in January.

The Torrey Pines Golf Course lies almost within Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, a stretch of wild coastal land preserving about 3,000 rare Torrey pine trees, a great salt marsh, and a waterfowl refuge. Visitors can try one of several short but strenuous hiking trails—the Beach Trail leading down to Torrey State Beach is less than 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) long. Public guided tours depart from the visitor center on weekends and holidays twice a day.
