POINT OF INTEREST

Treasurer's House

Minster Yard, York, Yorkshire, YO1 7JL

Explore one of the original National Trust properties at York’s Treasurer’s House, an opulent and eclectic 2-story mansion set amid landscaped gardens that has a fascinating history spanning 2,000 years. Highlights include the period rooms replete with historical artifacts, including a Queen Anne bedspread and a blown-glass chandelier, as well as the allegedly haunted cellars.

The Basics

While it’s possible to explore independently, you’ll get more from your visit to Treasurer’s House on an hour-long guided tour, during which you’ll learn about the house’s illustrious past and eccentric former owner, Frank Green. Treasurer’s House is also a must-see stop on several guided, themed city tours, from bike tours to spooky ghost excursions that take in other York attractions. Meanwhile, the expansive, manicured gardens which overlook York Minster are free to enter on open days year-round.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Book your tour slot in advance to avoid disappointment on the day.

  • While parts of the house are suitable for those with wheelchairs and strollers, much of the building is accessible by stairs only.

  • Children can keep themselves entertained with a free activity sheet during their visit.

  • Dogs are permitted in the gardens, although they must be kept on a short leash at all times—enter via Dean’s Park.

  • National Trust Members benefit from free entry to Treasurer's House.

How to Get There

Treasurer’s House is situated just outside York city center, close to York Minster and within easy walking distance of York train station. The closest available parking is streetside on Lord Mayor’s Walk, but spots fill up fast. Visit as part of a guided tour to bypass a long walk from a far-away parking spot.

When to Get There

The best time to visit Treasurer’s House is midweek during term time, as weekends and school holidays tend to be much busier and require pre-booking for access and guided tours. If you plan on enjoying the gardens, stop by in summer when the weather is generally more pleasant.

What to Do in York City Center

Situated conveniently close to the city center, a visit to Treasurer’s House can easily be combined with stops at other key attractions, either independently or as part of a city tour. Neighboring York Minster is unmissable; walking the York City Walls offers a great way to get a bird’s-eye view of this historic destination; and Jorvik Viking Centre is essential for travelers with kids.
