Trigg Beach

Trigg, Perth, Western Australia, 6029

Whether you’re surfing, boogie boarding, stand-up paddleboarding, or kitesurfing, Trigg Beach is the place to catch some waves. Less than a half-hour from Perth, this local favorite is a beach of two halves separated by the rocky headland of Trigg Island, with miles of white sands and access to the reefs and lagoons of Marmion Marine Park.

The basics

Trigg Beach is the ideal spot to escape the crowds if you’re looking for a surf beach within easy reach of Perth. Pack a picnic and head to the white-sand shores to swim, surf, and enjoy water sports. The waves are biggest on the southern side of Trigg Island, making it popular with surfers, while the northern side provides access to the Marmion Marine Park and Mettam’s Pool, where you can enjoy swimming and snorkeling from the shore. Look for seabirds around the island, and you might even spot dolphins along the coast.

Things to know before you go

  • The waves can be powerful at Trigg Beach, so it’s best suited to more experienced surfers. To swim, be sure to stay within the marked swimming zone.

  • There are picnic areas, BBQs, restrooms, showers, and changing facilities at the beach. A café and restaurant are also located by the seafront.

  • Free parking is available at Trigg Beach, and the beach is free to access.

How to get there

Trigg Beach is about nine miles (15 kilometers) northwest of Perth, or about a 30-minute drive. There’s no public transport directly to the beach, although you could catch the bus to Scarborough Beach and walk up (at least 20 minutes). Otherwise, you’ll need your own transport or to take a taxi from Perth.

When to get there

Perth’s year-round sunshine means you can swim, surf, and scuba dive through all four seasons, but the summer months still pull in the biggest crowds. The best surf is typically in the morning, and it’s worth starting early to snag a parking spot—places can be limited in summer.

Snorkeling and scuba diving at Marmion Marine Park

The protected waters between Trigg Island and Burns Rocks make up the Marmion Marine Park, where a string of inshore limestone reefs, islands, ledges, and caverns provide a thrilling underwater landscape for snorkelers and scuba divers and spectacular marine life sightings. Enjoy scuba diving at popular dive sites such as Boyinabout Reef, Cow Rocks, and Wanneroo Reef; go snorkeling in an area known for its Australian sea lions, or take a winter whale-watching cruise from Hillary’s Boat Harbour.
