Tsambika Beach

Rhodes, Rhodes

Hemmed in by a crescent of jagged rocks, Tsambika Beach is an idyllic stretch of golden sand and crystalline water that is considered one of Rhodes’ most beautiful beaches. A popular stop for boat cruises around the island, the beach is well-served by beach bars and eateries—but with no town nearby, the focus is firmly on the sun and sea.

The basics

Tsambika takes its name from the Monastery of the Virgin of Tsambika, perched high above the north end of the beach. The steep climb to the top, via 297 stone steps, affords spectacular views over the bay. You can visit Tsambika Beach on a day cruise exploring Rhodes' east coast beach spots and scenery, or join a driving or quad bike tour of the island to reach the beach by land. To really leave your worries behind, consider choosing a tour or shore excursion that includes lunch and a stop at Kalithea Spa.

Things to know before you go

  • With no nearby town, Tsambika Beach is less developed than many other beaches on Rhodes. Head here for a break from the cruise-ship crowds.

  • Bring a swimsuit and towel if you are planning on taking a dip, as there are no shops along the beach. You can rent loungers, deck chairs, and umbrellas for the day from one of the many beach clubs.

  • There are beachfront cafés and snack bars that serve light dishes, so you can make a day of it.

  • The sand on this beach gets scorchingly hot during the day, so be sure to bring sandals or flip-flops to walk around.

  • The beach does not have areas accessible to wheelchairs.

How to get there

Tsambika Beach is located on the island of Rhodes, about 16 miles (26 kilometers) south of Rhodes town, and can be reached by car—there is a small parking lot near the beach—or public transportation, or by joining a tour that stops at the beach.

When to get there

The island’s beaches virtually shutter in the winter, but in the summer Tsambika Beach is a popular choice for those who want to experience a relatively unspoiled stretch of coastline. The sun can be unforgiving at midday, so be sure to protect yourself with sunscreen and stay in the shade if you're spending the day.

The east coast beaches of Rhodes

In addition to Tsambika Beach, there are a number of beautiful beaches to explore on Rhodes' eastern coastline. Lindos, one of the most beautiful towns on the island of Rhodes, sits above the three beaches of Lindos Beach, Pallas Beach, and St. Paul’s Bay, all perfect for swimming and relaxing. Faliraki, one of the most popular beaches on Rhodes, is lined with beach clubs and offers water sports like wind surfing and water skiing, a big draw for families.
