Tsangarides Winery
Paphos, Cyprus
At Tsangarides Winery, on the edge of Lemona village, vineyards cover the lower slopes of the Troodos Mountains and surround its neat stone cellar. Bottles and casks of full-bodied reds and dry aromatic whites are stored in the cellar, while outdoor terrace seating is the ideal place to enjoy samples, snacks, and the rustic hillside scenery.
The basics
With a broad selection of wines to sample at Tsangarides Winery, expect to spend at least an hour here. This is generally what most wine tours from Paphos allow at each winery and how long the combined tour of the winery and tasting package typically lasts. After their stop at Tsangarides Winery, tourists seeking additional wineries will find a nice assortment of more wineries further into the mountains around Statos–Agios Fotios and Pano Panagia.
Things to know before you go
- Tsangarides Winery also offers a range of organic wines.
- The winery has no restaurant, only cheeseboards, and other small snacks available.
- Families with children may find the bottling process interesting and can enjoy grape juice instead.
How to get there
Tsangarides Winery is situated in Lemona among the hills northeast of Paphos, a roughly 40-minute drive from the city. Tourists will need a rental car to reach its remote location in the foothills of the Troodos Mountains, or they can take a tour that visits the winery and handles the transportation for them. The winery sits along a narrow road, so drive with caution.
When to get there
The winery is open Monday through Saturday during standard business hours. The staff offers winery tours twice daily: once in the late morning and once in the early afternoon. Since Paphos is a popular summer destination, expect the winery to be busier on summer afternoons, and book in advance if you want to take the tour.
Visiting wineries in Cyprus
Cyprus has a long history of wine-producing thanks to its accommodating climate and the island's hilly interior. Wineries cling to the foothills on the southern side of the Troodos Mountains, meaning Paphos and Limassol are well-placed for a day away wine tasting. Mavro and xynisteri grapes are the most common on the island; blending these two creates the famous Cypriot dessert wine of commandaria.
