The clear, warm waters of the Caribbean Sea surrounding this sunken tugboat are a bonus—the main attraction is the intact boat hull, which has been transformed into an underwater jungle. As you glide through the water, you'll be greeted by a kaleidoscope of colors, with schools of vibrant fish darting in and out of the coral formations.
The basics
Sunk in only 15 feet (5 meters) of water, the tugboat is a perfect spot for beginner divers and adventurous snorkelers. With the calm waters, minimal currents, and close proximity to shore, Tugboat Beach is an ideal area to get comfortable exploring the underwater world. The nearby Tugboat Bar is a great spot to unwind after your adventures, while history buffs will want to check out the Caracas Bay Quarantine Building, which overlooks the water.
Things to know before you go
Never touch coral formations—they’re extremely delicate.
Bring plenty of reef-safe sunscreen; the sun can still reach you when you’re diving.
The dive site is accessed from the beach—no boat trip is necessary.
How to get there
From the main city of Willemstad, it’s a 25-minute drive along Caracasbaaiweg. If you don’t have your own car, it’s possible to book a dive or snorkel tour with included pickup and drop-off. Otherwise, check with your accommodation on shuttle services or recommended taxi companies.
When to get there
The dry season in Curacao runs February–May (with Curacao Carnival season running January–February), and it's an excellent time to visit the island. Opt for a morning swim so you can unwind afterwards with a cold beer at the Tugboat Bar—a true beach bar with eclectic decor.
Scoot through the sea
If you’re looking for something different from the classic snorkeling tour, visit the nearby sivAquatics for an underwater scooter tour. This gives you the option to explore the wreck without needing scuba diving equipment—the scooter (a kind of mini Jet Ski you hold on to) does all the work of getting you to the boat, and all you need to do is hold your breath when you go under.
