Twenty Mule Team Canyon
Death Valley National Park, CA
While visiting Death Valley National Park, many travelers make the drive (or hike) down Twenty Mule Team Canyon. This short 1-way road runs a little over 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) through eroded badland hills. Because of its narrowness, rough terrain, and tight turns, it can be a challenging route even when driving, but the sights are a great payoff.
The basics
If you want to tackle Twenty Mule Team Canyon on your own, you can hike, bike, or drive. For a little extra ease, book a Death Valley National Park Tour that incorporates Twenty Mule Team Trail into its itinerary. Many of these types of tours travel by 4-wheel-drive and make stops along the way at great photo spots. If you’re driving there independently, you can also opt for a self-guided driving tour through the canyon.
Things to know before you go
- Because Twenty Mule Team Canyon can be a difficult drive at times, you’ll always want to check road conditions ahead of your visit.
- If you choose to mountain bike or hike the canyon road instead of driving, make sure you’re prepared with plenty of water and other necessities, such as food and proper hiking shoes and clothing.
- Twenty Mule Team Canyon welcomes dogs who are leashed.
- Summer temperatures are very hot, so it’s best to only drive if you visit at that time.
How to get there
Getting to Twenty Mule Team Canyon in Death Valley National Park is simple—follow CA-190. The starting location on the road is past the Death Valley National Park pay station and shortly before Zabriskie Point. There will be a road sign you’ll see that points out the beginning of the unpaved road. If you’re not driving there, joining a tour is a convenient option.
When to get there
If you’re planning to hike Twenty Mule Team Canyon, avoid the summer heat and opt for late fall or early spring. It’s also best to choose an early-morning or late-night hike time. Keep in mind that the road can flood during times of the year when it rains, so make sure to check the weather before you go.
Visit the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes
Be sure to make a stop at the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes during your trip to Death Valley. These dunes are some of the easiest to reach in the national park, making them an ideal place to visit. Some people pair their Twenty Mule Team Canyon visit with these dunes on the same day or spend a second day exploring them—they’re only about a 30-minute drive from one another.
