Ubud Art Market
Jl. Raya Ubud 35, Ubud, Indonesia, 80571
Packed to the rafters with artisan items, Ubud Art Market is the place to come for Balinese souvenirs. This colorful cornucopia sells everything from silk scarves and flowing skirts to carved Hindu and Buddhist statues, traditional Balinese masks, and exotic fruit—and shot to fame when Julia Roberts visited in the Eat, Pray, Love movie.
The basics
Ubud Art Market is a staple of Bali shopping tours, which you can personalize according to what you want to buy. It’s also a feature of Ubud highlight tours, which typically combine it with the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary—a temple complex home to hundreds of free-roaming macaques—and Tegenungan Waterfall, shrouded by lush jungle. The market is opposite Ubud Royal Palace, which is one of the best places to watch a traditional Balinese dance performance in the evening.
Things to know before you go
Haggling is encouraged, as long as the prices you offer respect the work of the local artisans.
While some vendors accept cards, bringing cash is a good idea, especially in small denominations.
The products in this art-focused market tend to be of a higher quality than other less specialized markets, so bear that in mind when offering your price.
As in all busy areas, be mindful of your valuables while you’re browsing, and make sure they’re secure.
How to get there
Ubud Art Market is at 35 Jalan Raya Ubud, on the same road as Ubud Royal Palace and Ubud Water Palace. The closest bus stop is Lapangan Astina Ubud, on the K4B bus line, but motorbike taxis are so cheap and plentiful that you’re better off taking one of those to the market, as they’re best for weaving in and out of Bali’s notorious traffic.
When to get there
Ubud Art Market is open from early morning to early evening, but some vendors follow different opening hours. It’s busiest during the middle and end of the day—lots of travelers visit before catching a dance performance at Ubud Royal Palace. Arrive early for the least crowded browsing experience.
The best shopping spots in Bali
Whether you’re looking for a boutique or batik, Bali is a shopping hot spot. Along with Ubud Art Market, Kumbasari Art Market sells artisans’ goods and offers a more relaxed shopping experience. For a more modern mall setting, Kuta Beachwalk has air-conditioned stores and designer brands, while the shopping streets in Seminyak offer a mix of hand-crafted fashion and souvenirs.
